Ace musician, Rex Omar has revealed that he was lured into drugs, but he was saved by the grace of God.
Speaking in an interview on Accra based Happy FM, Rex Omar told host, Dr Cann that it only takes the grace of God to get out of the icy hands of drug addiction, hence he would not overly chastise people or creative artistes who have been lured or are doing drugs.
“A lot of artistes are tricked into doing drugs by the labels they work with. In most cases, they’re tricked into these things and that was the level I got to until I left. It was only by the Grace of God,” Rex Omar intimated.
According to Rex Omar, some of these record labels abuse their artiste’s desire for success. In doing so, they gradually lure them into hard drugs and it ends up affecting them.
Rex Omar bemoaned the sad aspect of exploitation on the path of these managers and record labels. According to the former Nakorex team member and ABiba hitmaker, some musicians after making it into the limelight would be tricked by their managers to use drugs to enhance their performance so they could do more.
“Because they’re passionate for success, they want to play till the end. And when their managers see this, they start to hook them on drugs to enhance their performance and help them overcome fatigue. After taking the drugs continually, they get hooked to it.”
He, therefore, hit hard at fans who overly criticize musicians or judge them for abusing drugs since they do not know what pushed them into doing drugs in the first place and what is currently going on in the privacy of the homes of these musicians.
“But we should separate their professional life from their private life.”
Speaking on a longstanding rumour of drug use by the Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO), Mr Omar was quite emphatic stating that he doesn’t smoke weed or marijuana, but he doesn’t also condemn those who use it, even though it may be in the contracts of some musicians in Europe and America.
“I don’t take weed and I have no problem with anyone who uses weed. We are too judgemental. Someone drinks tea and another also take weed. What moral right do you have to judge these individuals?” Rex asked.
