President Nana Akufo-Addo has revealed in his 12th address to the nation that about GH 75.4 million cedis would be spent on this year’s West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (WASSCE).
Addressing the nation on the measures to mitigate against the spread of Covid-19, Sunday, 21st June, 2020, President Akufo Addo revealed that for the first time, Ghana government will absorb all the WASSCE fees to be paid by Ghanaian parents.
However, according to the President, this would amount to about 75.4 million Ghana cedis. President Akufo Addo thus stated that the government will absorb the entire WASSCE fees of the 313,837 registered candidates for this year’s WASCCE.
“For the first time in our nation’s history, the government will absorb the WASCCE examinations fee of the 313,837 registered students who will sit for the exams”. However, GH 75.4 million cedis, will be spent on this” he added.
“Akufo-Addo graduates” to benefit from GH 75.4 million cedis WASSCE expenditure as the first batch of FREE SHS students.
The president used the opportunity to remind Ghanaians that these batch of students are the first beneficiaries of the Free SHS policy introduced by the Akufo-Addo led government.
However, according to the president, about 1.2 million children have been enrolled in the various Senior High Schools.
“These SHS 3 students also referred to by some as the Akufo- Addo graduates are also the first group to enjoy the Akufo-Addo free SHS policy. 1.2 million children, the highest such enrolment in our nation’s history. This is because of this policy” he reiterated.
Tomorrow, 22nd June, 2020, final year Senior High School students are set to reopen and spend six weeks in school. Similarly, 2nd year Gold Track SHS students would also go back to school.
Moreover, government has disinfected about 1,200 Senior High Schools. However, one dormitory block is to be used as an isolation centre according to the president.
