Mahama promises to free galamsey operators jailed under President Akufo-Addo

Former President John Dramani Mahama and presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has promised to free galamsey operators who were jailed under the watch ship of the current government if he is voted into power.

The former president is currently embarking on a campaign tour in the Western Region. After making a stop at Odum Banso in the Mpohor Constituency in the Western Region on Thursday, October 22, 2020, Mahama revealed that it was unfortunate that foreigners are pardoned for the same and yet Ghanaians are rather imprisoned for the same mining offence.

He made reference to the release of Aisha Huang as a clear example of foreigners who are freed when they allegedly committed the same crime with their Ghanaian counterparts.

“It’s sad. The government said it was fighting galamsey, and they arrested, prosecuted, and jailed Ghanaians who were engaged in that activity but left the Chinese woman Aisha Huang.”

According to Mahama, today her Ghanaian counterparts are still languishing in jail, hence when he (Mahama) comes he will free all of those who were jailed because of galamsey so they can come back home and work to feed their families.

“Today, they are still in prison. That Chinese galamsey queen was arrested but left to go free. She was never prosecuted but our people are in jail suffering. When we come, we shall grant all those arrested and jailed some amnesty. They will come back to their homes and work. I believe that they have suffered enough, shown remorse for whatever wrong they committed. We will institute measures to check the operations of small scale mining,”

In recent times, former President John Mahama has made a lot of promises including free primary health care and legalizing okada business.
